Are you accepting applications for 2010-2011?
Yes, we accept applications through the electronic system, ERAS, which is available through your medical school, or the ECFMG if you are a foreign medical graduate.
What is your Criteria for Selection of Residents?
The Duke University Medical Center and Affiliated Institutions Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program receives over 600 applications per year for the eight positions approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Approximately 80 applicants are selected for interview per year for the eight positions.
Residents are selected for interview on the basis of preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity and specifically to include the following:
Educational Accomplishments (including Honors, Grades)
Board Scores
Letters of Recommendation
Medical School Performance
Important intangibles which are fundamental to the selection process include:
Leadership
Work Ethic
Communication Skills
Enthusiasm
Residents are selected for appointment to our program through the National Resident Matching Program after personal interview and review of the above listed criteria.
What is your deadline for application/ Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) materials?
Our deadline is November 6, 2009.
Do you require hard copies of materials submitted through ERAS?
No, we do not require additional copies.
How many letters of recommendation do you require?
We require three (3) letters of recommendation; however, additional letters are accepted.
Do you require a letter from the Chairman/ Chief/ Program Director of Orthopaedics?
Not required but obviously to your advantage.
Do you require additional information outside of ERAS (i.e. SAT scores, MCAT scores, etc.)?
No
Do you require a curriculum vitae (CV) other then the generated ERAS version?
No
Will you accept a curriculum vitae (CV) in addition to the generated ERAS version?

How many applicants do you accept a year?
We are ACGME approved to accept eight (8) trainees per year.
What is your USMLE minimal score requirement?
We do not have a minimal score requirement, however, applicants must document passing scores in the first two parts of appropriate medical licensure examinations (USMLE, COMLEX, or equivalent Canadian examinations, etc.) to be eligible for entry into any program at Duke University Hospital. This policy applies to all graduate medical trainees whether United States or International Medical School graduates. Applicants who have not taken part II and are not scheduled to take part II before the interview season starts, may go ahead and apply; however, once you've taken and passed part II and have updated ERAS with the results, please e-mail Ms. Wendy Thompson at wendy.thompson@duke.edu
so that your application may be updated. We would prefer to be notified of your passing before the match, however, it is not required. If you match to Duke, we must be notified of your passing by May 31st and scores must be uploaded to ERAS (before the system closes). Please be sure to schedule your examination early so that you are notified of your results well in advance of your potential residency start date.

What is your policy on medical licensure examinations?
Applicants are required to meet the following medical licensure examination requirements set forth by Duke Hospital and must provide supporting documentation when applying to our Program.
All appointees to Duke must have taken and passed the first two parts of appropriate medical licensure examinations (USMLE/COMLEX/or equivalent Canadian examinations, etc.) to be eligible for entry into any Duke program. Appointees entering a program at the PGY 3 level or higher must have taken and passed part three. This policy applies to all graduate medical trainees whether United States or International Medical School graduates. Applicants who have not taken part II and are not scheduled to take part II before the interview season starts, may go ahead and apply; however, once you've taken and passed part II and have updated ERAS with the results, please e-mail Ms. Wendy Thompson at wendy.thompson@duke.edu

Do you offer an observership or externship/elective at your Program?
We do not arrange observerships as it diminishes the educational experience of the Duke and Visiting Medical Students who are completing an elective rotation in Duke Orthopaedic Surgery. It is suggested that you contact a Faculty Member directly and inquire if/she would be interested in hosting an observer. If approved, you will be required to complete and sign a Visiting Observer Agreement form (with the understanding that you may not participate in the medical care of patients beyond observation while at Duke University Medical Center) and complete and sign a Confidentiality Agreement. Our office does not arrange visiting observerships. You will need to call (919) 684-4033 to discuss the paperwork process and provide Faculty approval statement.
We do offer an externship/elective program. In order to apply for an elective at Duke, you must currently be enrolled in medical school and an affiliation agreement between Duke and your home institution must be in place. Do you accept foreign national graduates?
Yes. Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid and current ECFMG certificate at the time that they apply and be eligible to obtain a medical license in the State of North Carolina.
Do you have a cutoff date for graduation years out of medical school? No.
Do you require previous U.S. clinical experience? No.
Do you sponsor J-1 or H-1B Visa's?
We sponsor J-1 Visa's only, however, individual circumstances may alter this. Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid and current ECFMG certificate at the time that they apply to our Program.
Does your program require any Prelims - Surgery or Medicine experience?
No. The Duke Orthopaedic Program is PGY 1 through PGY 5.
Do you accept applicants from an Osteopathic Medical School?
Yes. Applicants must have taken and passed the first two parts of appropriate medical licensure examinations to be eligible for entry into any Duke program. This policy applies to all graduate medical trainees whether United States or International Medical School graduates.

We will begin notifying applicants by e-mail sometime after our deadline.
What are your interview dates?
We generally conduct interviews in November and December for a total of three (3) interview dates. Dates are provided to applicants at time of invitation.
