The Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program is five years in length and the PGY-1 year consists of rotations in the subspecialties at Duke in keeping with the requirements of the ABOS/ACGME. We are ACGME approved to accept eight (8) trainees per year.
We accept applications through the electronic system,
ERAS, which is available through your medical school, or the
ECFMG if you are a foreign medical graduate. Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid and current ECFMG certificate and be eligible to obtain a medical license in North Carolina.

We do not have a minimal score requirement, however, applicants must document passing scores in the first two parts of appropriate medical licensure examinations (USMLE, COMLEX, or equivalent Canadian examinations, etc.) to be eligible for entry into any program at Duke University Hospital. This policy applies to all graduate medical trainees whether United States or International Medical School graduates. Applicants who have not taken part II and are not scheduled to take part II before the interview season starts, may go ahead and apply; however, once you've taken and passed part II and have updated ERAS with the results, please e-mail Ms. Wendy Thompson at wendy.thompson@duke.edu
so that your application may be updated. We would prefer to be notified of your passing before the match, however, it is not required. If you match to Duke, we must be notified of your passing by May 31st and scores must be uploaded to ERAS (before the system closes). Please be sure to schedule your examination early so that you are notified of your results well in advance of your potential residency start date.

Resident applicants are selected for interview in accordance with our
Criteria for Selection of Residents. Completed applications will be reviewed by the Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Selection Committee and interview will be by written invitation. We generally conduct interviews in November and December for a total of three (3) interview dates. Dates are provided at time of invitation.
Inquiries concerning receipt of application should be directed toward your ERAS Applicant Document Tracking System. Due to volume of printed information, we will not be able to answer inquiries concerning the status of your application until after November 6, 2009.

Criteria for Selection of Residents
The Duke University Medical Center and Affiliated Institutions Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program receives over 600 applications per year for the eight positions approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Approximately 80 applicants are selected for interview per year for the eight positions.
Residents are selected for interview on the basis of preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity and specifically to include the following:
Educational Accomplishments (including Honors, Grades)
Board Scores
Letters of Recommendation
Medical School Performance
Important intangibles which are fundamental to the selection process include:
